  • Rail
Client Requirements
Waux have been working with Chiltern Rail to renovate several of their stations – creating safer and more accessible footbridges for passengers.
The Solution
Each station had its own unique requirements, from removing and installing GRP treads, preparing and painting surfaces, to fitting DDA-compliant handrails.
Project Delivery
This scheme was completed over two phases. Refurbishments were carried out under a tight programme, and Waux coordinated the projects from survey to installation.

Project Journey

The Chiltern Line connects two major cities – London and Birmingham. The route is approximately 112 miles long and passes through many notable locations such as Banbury, Leamington Spa, and Bicester. Waux was chosen to partner with contractors in order to complete many refurbishments along the Chiltern Line.

At the start of each project, Waux conducted a site survey of each station, outlining what work needed to take place.

After the scope of work at each station had been finalised, Waux supplied the large variety of materials needed. For example, some stations required new handrails, such as Denham and Northolt Park, as their existing ones were not compliant. Additionally, stair treads, such as our VulcaGR!P stair treads and landing covers, were supplied to many of the stations along the line, including the necessary fixings and adhesive.

Once the refurbishment programme had been agreed, installation followed. Waux effectively oversaw the preparation and painting of steel, installers removing and replacing anti-slip surfacing, and the addition of handrails, to ensure that each project was carried out to a high-quality standard. Each station had a different set of requirements, which made each project bespoke.

For example, at Northolt Station, railings were repainted, DDA-compliant handrails were installed, and surfacing was removed and then replaced with new anti-slip treads and landing sheets.

At Aylesbury Station, overbridge panels, handrails and balustrading were re-painted. Additionally, stair treads, tactile and overbridge anti-slip surfaces were removed and replaced.

As a result of the refurbishments along the Chiltern Line, passengers can now benefit from improved facilities, which are essential for ensuring accessibility and safety.
