Trimley Station Footbridge
Trimley Station was selected for an AfA refurbishment; part of which involved a major footbridge renovation.
An upgraded footbridge was installed, made up of a structural GRP system in order to prolong the future lifespan of the bridge.
After extensive improvements to the steelwork were complete, our ZedSPAN® GRP Structural Tread and Landing System was installed by our trusted installation contractors.

AfA Footbridge Refurbishment
Trimley Station is situated on the Felixstowe Branch Line in Greater Anglia, an area which has recently undergone major improvements worth a total of £1.2 million. The previous station footbridge at Trimley was composed of a steel structure with a timber deck, landings, and treads, and in August 2022, Circet UK and their chosen subcontractor started work on site to make this footbridge AfA compliant.
In order to extend the design life of the new footbridge, the client made the decision to remove the rotten timber substrate and invest in a structural GRP tread and landing system, awarding Waux with the supply of this package. A full overview of the advantages of a structural GRP system can be found here.
Waux ZedSPAN® GRP structural stair tread and landing system was selected for this project due to its features and design, including market-leading load test results, high performing anti-slip surface and replaceable stair edges.
Thanks to our stock capabilities in South London and in-house specialist fabrication team, the products were supplied on time and any extra requirements on site were dispatched on a next day delivery service to keep the project on track. All products were accurately cut to size to ensure seamless install for the sub-contractor and Waux offered both the main and sub-contractors real-time technical and installation support throughout the course of the project, from initial site survey right through to completion.
Greater Anglia’s Asset Management Director, Simone Bailey, said: “The work at Trimley Station means that the footbridge is now looking much smarter, has improved customer safety and is helping to enhance the station environment for our customers.”
