Ryde Pier
Ryde Pier was in major need of repair after 143 years of constant use.
Waux supplied our GridEX® GRP Grating, cut to size to fulfil bespoke requirements for track access.
The project was split into phases, and Waux worked to a tight schedule to ensure that each section was ready for installation.

Rail Trackside/Marine
Ryde is a popular tourist destination on the East Coast of the Isle of Wight. The 143-year-old pier extending into the sea was built in the Victorian era and by 2016, it was in severe need of restoration.
Refurbishment of the historic structure started in November 2022. Part of these renovations involved upgrading the track between the Ryde Pier Head and Ryde Esplanade stations at either end of the pier.
To provide a safe walking route for track engineers, GRP was seen as the obvious solution due to its non-conductivity and resistance to the side effects of harsh marine environments. It also had to comply with the goal of extending the life of Ryde Pier for a further 60 years. GRP is far more durable than other traditional materials such as steel as it does not rust.
The project was split into several phases and over the course of the 2 month delivery period , Waux supplied our GridEX® GRP Grating for safer walkways, along with all necessary fixings and packers.
Our specialist fabrication team followed intricate drawings; tapering and angling each cut to fit the overall curve of the track and the pier itself.
Thanks to the initial site survey carried out by one of our surveyors and close communication with the client, Waux’ attention to detail results in a seamless finish.
Waux are pleased to have been a part of a monumental project that will ensure the public can enjoy this area of natural beauty for the foreseeable future.
“We found Waux to be very helpful from the start of the project at design stage which included a site visit/survey at Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight. Throughout the duration of the project, we were provided with information and technical data for our client on the products procured. Speedy responses for quotations and advice on additional works.”
