Project Journey

Following the closure of a wooden pedestrian bridge in Pewsey, Wiltshire, a tragic accident occurred which highlighted the need to Network Rail to replace and re-open the rotten bridge.

Once the client had detailed what their specifications were, Waux worked alongside customer Balfour Beatty, to finalise designs for a new compliant GRP pedestrian bridge.

Waux created CAD drawings and a 3D model, which were approved and signed off prior to manufacturing. The fabrication team at Waux followed a strict quality assurance process to ensure compliance of the final build.

Waux ZedSPAN® Structural GRP Deck Planks were used to extend the design life of the bridge over against traditional materials such as timber, which begins to degrade after a short time.  Recycled plastic wood-effect handrails were fitted to replicate the existing timber on the previous bridge.

This project wouldn’t have been possible without the team involved, including Network Rail, Balfour Beatty and Pod-Trak. Install took place at night in order to minimise disruption to the local residents and was completed successfully, overseen by Waux.

Now the new GRP bridge is installed it provides a safer point of access for residents and has received positive feedback from the local MP, Danny Kruger, as below.

“Local residents all seemed very happy and commented how quiet and considerate the workmen had been while removing and replacing the bridge.”
