New England Bridge Staircase
Network Rail required a new access point to enable track engineers to reach the line from New England Bridge.
Waux designed a GRP embankment staircase to provide safe access to the track.
Once approved, the staircase was fabricated and delivered to site in large units.

Rail Trackside
Network Rail has been upgrading sites around the country to improve the safety of its infrastructure. A new build staircase was required next to New England Bridge, near Huntingdon.
As the staircase would be very close to the overhead lines, there was the chance of electrification. GRP was the perfect solution to this problem thanks to it’s non-conductive properties.
There was no existing structure to base the design on, so Waux was involved in the design right from the outset.
Firstly, one of our surveyors visited the location to take measurements and angles in order to create a CAD drawing. Waux recommend an in-person survey to determine the actual angle of the embankment, prior to manufacture.
Designs for a GRP staircase were then raised, based on the site survey. Waux worked closely with Network Rail to adjust the drawings until they were ready for sign-off.
Once approved by Network Rail, the access structure was manufactured in our workshop then delivered to site in prefabricated units once the client was ready for installation.
In simple kit form, the GRP staircase was quickly installed, meaning operatives could use the new access point within hours of delivery.
