Project Journey

Honiton Tunnel in East Devon passes through earth that is subject to landslides, and according to Network Rail, is one of the most at-risk sites in the south of England.

As part of the on going works to stabilise the soil around Honiton area, access was needed up the embankment. After various project changes, a flight of GRP stairs was designed for worker access over the retaining wall.

Waux worked closely with the architects, Tier 1 contractor, and Tier 2 installer to propose a practical solution and sign off drawings in time for possession date.

Once the CAD drawings were finalised and the design was approved, Waux fabricated the bespoke GRP access structure within a total timeframe of 3 weeks.

This was then delivered to site in kit form, requiring only 2 units to be lowered into place, and pre-fabricated GRP Handrail units to be bolted on site.

Despite Waux not having visited site due to time constraints, the finished staircase fitted seamlessly within the existing handrail run and foundations. This was thanks to the attention to detail and input of all the team, from designers to manufacturers to installers.

Waux are pleased to have assisted with a scheme that is working to prevent landslips, flooding, and ultimately aims to minimise disruption and keep passengers safe.
