Eastfield Track Crossing
An existing timber walkway across the tracks was rotting, slippery and in need of replacement.
Waux provided a GRP track crossing walkway with a chain deflector guard for signal box workers.
Waux fabrication team cut each panel to size to fit the existing track, and supplied a support frame for installation.

Eastfield Signal Box is a Grade II listed building, based in Peterborough on the Great Northern Railway. The previous walkway for workers to cross the tracks to access the signal box was formed of timber planks. Bad weather conditions made the wood slippery and caused it to rot, meaning the walkway was constantly in need of replacement. Furthermore, the chains on the underside of train carriages constantly damaged the timber boards as trains passed overhead at high speeds.
Waux conducted an initial site visit to assess the requirements and take dimensions.
Based on the site survey, a GRP track crossing walkway system was recommended. GridEX® Solid-Top 55mm GRP Grating was chosen as it is our most durable grating and is suitable for all footwear types. This ensures that the depot and signal box is accessible for all. RAL 1023 colour was used for highest visibility, especially in low-light conditions.
Waux fabrication team then cut and tapered each GRP panel to fit the tracks, also providing the necessary support frame system and fixings for installation.
Waux also developed a chain deflector guard to replace the temporary timber props. This ramp protects the edges of the track crossing to ensure it will last for many years to come.
The long design life and anti-slip surface of GridEX® Solid-Top will provide substantial benefits, as noted by Network Rail Off-Track Team Leader:
“This is going to reduce our maintenance and reported faults by a long way!”
