ASTEP® London Line Range featured in the new sustainable development at Denmark Hill Railway Station

ASTEP® London Line Range featured on the new entrance at Denmark Hill, already receiving industry recognition and has been shortlisted for two 2021 National Rail Awards – ‘Infrastructure Project of the Year’ and ‘Sustainable Development of the Year’.

Denmark Hill Station Upgrade, London

For the new entrance at Denmark Hill Station AFA upgrade, Waux were initially engaged with our client who was working on behalf of main contractor, Bam Nuttall before being successfully awarded the package for the supply of our ASTEP® London Line range.

With tight deadlines and the requirement for high performing products, our client understood the benefits of using Waux as their preferred supplier for the project.

Our ASTEP® London Line range in cast nickel bronze with yellow high vision edge, was selected to complete the new station entrance. Incorporating its high durability and superior anti-slip edge, ASTEP® London Line is the perfect solution for busy railway stations and transportation hubs. Installed at Denmark Hill Railway Station, with approximately 7.3 million passengers per year, our ASTEP® range has a design and wear life of 65 years. The yellow inserts were manufactured from our VulcaGR!P® range which have been specifically tested and approved by third parties to meet the demanding requirements of anti-slip and anti-wear within the Rail industry.

All products were delivered to site cut to size, drilled and scheduled with fixing method to ensure an unrivalled installation process. The project manager  was glad to report that the install went smoothly and although the deadline was tight, our rapid turnaround allowed our client to finish the project in time for handover.

The inserts used in ASTEP® are manufactured from our VulcaGR!P® range. To meet the demands of approved anti-slip products in the Rail industry, specifically London Underground, Waux VulcaGR!P® manufactured in GP, Class 1 & Phenolic Resins was tested in accordance with London Underground E6464 A2 Engineering Standards (SATRA TM144).

The method of test is intended to assess the potential of slipping for people walking on a flooring material. It determines the coefficient of friction (CoF) between footwear outsoles and flooring surfaces under conditions simulating those experienced at the most critical parts of a typical walking step.

Measurements were taken in three directions and the results in the table below proved that it satisfied the requirements of London Underground (LUL).

Test Condition Tested along Tested across Tested at 45⁰ Pass/Fail CoF Pass/Fail distance below 0/4 CoF
CoF Distance CoF below 0.4 (mm) CoF Distance CoF below 0.4 (mm) Distance CoF below 0.4 (mm)
Dry 0.77 0 0.76 0 0.81 0 Pass Pass
Wet 0.79 0 0.78 0 0.76 0 Pass Pass

The conclusion: “With regard to the slip resistance, the samples submitted under reference ‘VulcaGR!P Antislip surface finish – GP, Class 1 & Phenolic Resins’ has satisfied the requirements of London Underground E6464 A2 Engineering Standard – Rolling stock floor coverings. Sections 8.4 (SATRA TM144) Slip resistance of profiled floors.
